Across Washington, D.C., local government agencies acquire and use sophisticated surveillance technology with no public oversight or accountability. This poses a direct threat to the civil rights and civil liberties of all District residents, and disproportionately impacts communities of color and low-income communities. It's time for D.C. residents to take control.

We invite you to join Community Oversight of Surveillance — D.C. (COS-DC) on Wednesday, December 9, for a Town Hall. Experts in technology, law, and community impact will discuss the problem of unchecked surveillance and how District residents and leaders can work together to bring transparency and oversight to the D.C. government’s acquisition and use of surveillance technologies.

Following the panel discussion, attendees are welcome to join breakout rooms to learn more about the technology and legislation, and share and hear stories about how members of the D.C. community have been affected by government surveillance.

Moderator:

Mana Azarmi, Center for Democracy & Technology

Panelists:

Andrew Ferguson, American University

April Goggans, Black Lives Matter DC

Robb King, Data for Black Lives DC

Chad Marlow, ACLU

Sameena Usman, CAIR-SFBA/Secure Justice

Join the ACLU of the District of Columbia on November 12 for a celebration in honor of those in our community who defend and advance civil liberties in D.C. Hosted by ACLU-DC board member Rebecca Cokley, the Bill of Rights Celebration will honor:

  • M.B. Cottingham, whose lawsuit against a D.C. police officer over an unjustified, sexually invasive search exposed this type of unconstitutional search as troublingly frequent within MPD. The officer was fired, and the case sent a strong message that police officers must respect community members’ dignity and Constitutional rights.
  • Arnold & Porter, who partnered with us as co-counsel on two of our biggest lawsuits in 2020: Black Lives Matter D.C. v. Trump, our response to the tear gas attack on protesters at Lafayette Square, and Costa v. Bazron, our ongoing lawsuit over the dangerous conditions for hospital patients at St. Elizabeths during last fall’s month-long water outage and then the COVID-19 pandemic.

We'll also feature live music from Dr. KnuckleHead and have a few surprises in store. As challenging as 2020 has been, we still have a lot to be proud of. We hope you’ll join this virtual event to celebrate our work.

Closed captioning, ASL interpretation, and Spanish interpretation will be available during the event.

This event is free and open to all, but we hope that those who are able will make a gift to support the work that lies ahead. After registering, you’ll be redirected to a donation page.
