Each year, one-third of the Board, or eight seats, are elected by ACLU-DC members. Board members serve three-year terms and are responsible governance and fiscal stability, as well as attendance at six meetings each year. There are two ways to become a candidate for Board nomination.

Nominating Committee
Each year the Board Nominations Committee carefully considers the applications of potential board members to join the people who govern and direct the D.C. affiliate of the ACLU. If you would like to be considered for board nomination by the Board Nominations Committee, you must be a member in good standing and submit a brief statement of interest along with a nomination form. The Nominations Committee work is done on a rolling basis, but a slate is put forward in June of every year.

Petition
Nominations may also be submitted by petition. The petitioner must be a member in good standing. Nomination petitions must include the name, address and a statement of interest from the nominee. Petitions must be signed by the nominee expressing their willingness to serve if elected and be signed by ten (10) current ACLU of DC members. Petitioners may use their own form. Petitions may be sent to: ACLU-DC Elections, 915 15th St NW, 2nd Floor, Washington, DC 20005 or may be emailed to nominations@acludc.org.

Process
All those nominated, whether by committee or petition, must submit a statement (300 words or less) and a headshot or small photo (2x3” at 300 dpi). Candidates may use their own petition form.

Board elections are conducted online. Voting information is provided via email and postcard to members in good standing as of June 15 every year. All members are provided with a unique voting code prior to voting opening. Candidate statements and photos will be online for review prior to voting. Members desiring a hard copy ballot and candidate statements must contact the office at (202) 457-0800 or nominations@acludc.org.
