2026 in Review
2026 marks the 65th anniversary of the American Civil Liberties Union in the District of Columbia and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
This year has been full of big fights—and big wins. Here in the District, we’ve felt the ongoing attacks on our civil rights and liberties acutely. But this isn’t our first time fighting these fights.
The ACLU of D.C. was made for moments like this.
Our 2026 Impact Report shows how we have risen to the challenge of continuous and unprecedented attacks and seized opportunities to pave the way for a stronger democracy in the District. Together with you, our community, we continue to defend the rights of D.C. residents, workers, and visitors through legal action, policy advocacy, education, and strategic communications.
Our Impact in Numbers
This year we have:
- Fielded over 1,300 requests for legal assistance
- Tracked over 65 federal bills and 37 local bills and elevated D.C. voices in over 50 meetings with lawmakers
- Launched a new podcast series, A More Perfect District, which reached more than 30,000 listeners and viewers
- Educated D.C. residents with our online primary election voter hub, which featured questionnaire answers from 34 candidates in 7 races
- Handed out over 29,000 Know Your Rights materials in 5 languages to our community
- Challenged federal abuses, bringing our total number of cases and amicus briefs filed against the Trump administration to 38

Why I Support
“The reason I give (even on a limited budget) is because I can see the results. Living in D.C., I can look outside and see the people who are coming up with these atrocious, hateful policies and it is easy to feel like nothing we do can stop it, but that is not true. Participating in a protest with ACLU or donating means that we are pushing against the current trying to hold us back. I am committed to contributing to that progress.” – Joshlyn

—“I want to thank the ACLU of the District of Columbia for standing with me throughout my case and for defending my right and every American’s right to protest and speak out against our government.”
Sam O’Hara, a brave client who defended the First Amendment in the case O’Hara v. Beck
ACLU-D.C. by the Issues
In 2026, our team has worked tirelessly to respond to continued attacks on our civil rights and liberties. We have been creative, resourceful, collaborative, and relentless in our fight to defend D.C. Here are some highlights of our work:
—“I am deeply grateful to the ACLU and to my attorney for their unwavering advocacy and support throughout this process. While I wish this violation of my rights had never occurred, I appreciate the DMV’s willingness to promptly correct its error. This resolution is meaningful because it allows me to obtain a government-issued ID that is fully usable and because it reinforces the principle that individuals should never have to choose between their faith and access to essential government services.”
Dr. Sohayla Horani, a surgical resident who reached out to ACLU-D.C. when her rights were violated
