WASHINGTON - The following statement can be attributed to Monica Hopkins, Executive Director of ACLU-D.C.:
“Free and fair elections only mean something if the results are respected. The President’s threats to take over D.C. simply because he may disagree with an election outcome in November 2026 are deeply alarming. On June 16, 2026, D.C. residents went to the polls during D.C.’s primary elections and exercised their right to choose candidates for the November general election. D.C. residents have the right to choose their own government representatives, just as voters do across the country. In D.C., Trump’s remarks undermining democracy are especially dangerous because of the unique vulnerability of D.C.: without statehood, we don’t have the same protections other Americans have against federal interference. That is exactly why D.C. statehood is not just a matter of fairness — it’s a matter of basic democratic security. We remain committed to defending the integrity of D.C.’s elections and the right of District residents to self-governance, now and as we head into the November elections.”
