WASHINGTON, D.C. – Thousands of people will gather and march in Washington, D.C. today, joining a nationwide mobilization rejecting the Trump administration’s attempt to stifle dissent, attack political rivals, and undermine checks on his power.

Millions of people will participate in more than 2,300 events in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The events builds off the momentum of June’s day-of-action, which at the time was the largest protest yet during the second Trump administration. Since June’s protests, we’ve seen the Trump administration take shocking actions, including attempting to silence the press, students, and political opponents. President Trump also deployed armed troops and federal agents in D.C., an unprecedented action that attempted to strip D.C. leaders of the ability to make decisions about local law enforcement, and that treated D.C. as a testing ground for tactics that President Trump foreshadowed he would use across the country.

The ACLU of D.C. has sued the Trump administration on multiple occasions this year. Most recently, on September 25, the ACLU-D.C. joined with multiple immigrants and civil rights organizations to sue the Trump administration for engaging in a pattern of illegal arrests of immigrants – with no warrants and no probable cause. On September 15, we joined a coalition of D.C.-based civil rights and legal service organizations to file an amicus brief in support of the District of Columbia’s lawsuit challenging the President’s unilateral decision to deploy the National Guard to conduct law enforcement in the District.

The following can be attributed to Monica Hopkins, Executive Director at the ACLU-D.C., said today:
“President Trump is abusing the power of the presidency. Today, the people of D.C. condemn President Trump’s escalating abuse of power and send a clear message: we will not be silenced. Here in the District, we know all too well the impact of Trump’s brazen power grab. Federal agents and National Guard troops have flooded our streets, setting up checkpoints, hauling away our neighbors, and disrupting everyday life. This power grab by the Trump Administration is not about safety – it's about creating fear and further eroding our democracy.

“We will fight back against attacks from the Trump administration to protect our democracy. We’ve repeatedly challenged the administration’s illegal behavior. We won’t stop until the people’s rights are respected and protected. Trump’s unprecedented deployment of the National Guard and federal agents shows just how dangerous it is for D.C. to continue to be denied statehood. We don’t need Donald Trump or members of Congress with no connection to D.C. and who don’t represent us telling us how to govern ourselves. The people of the District deserve the same protections against federal overreach and abuse of power as the people of every other state.”
